Mistress Rosalind came to the SPCA in pretty rough condition. She has had some serious medical care, especially dental work Rosalind was admitted to the TSPCA with a jaw fracture and a significant heart murmur (iv/vi). She had her jaw radiographed, which revealed a simple fracture near the left mandibular ramus. She had multiple tooth extractions given her severe periodontal disease, and currently has only incisors and canines remaining. Rosalind's jaw fracture has caused a malalignment of her law; as a result, her lower right canine is poking into her soft palate. Rosalind's mouth should be examined 1-2 times per week to make sure that this lower right canine does not poke a hole into the underlying soft tissues. If the lesion on the soft palate worsens, the canine should be extracted. However, given Rosalind's considerable heart murmur, she is at an increased risk for anesthesia. Rosalind should also be maintained on soft food for the rest of her life, given her malaligned jaw and lack of molars and premolars (chewing teeth). Rosalind is currently on antibiotics for a chronic upper respiratory infection. To eliminate infection in her bones, she needs an extended course of antibiotics (4-6 weeks). Rosalind was initially started on Clavamox, but her conditioned worsened after the second week. Rosalind is now responding well to Clindamycin, and will need another 3-5 weeks. She should be reevaluated by the med staff once her antibiotics are done, to assess her progress and her mouth.
